Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster last day of competition.

Rai sank a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory against the same opponent.

Final Round Drama

The champion started the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.

Play-Off Decider

That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.

Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
