Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
