Seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
